about
In the midst of the #metoo campaign, I (Tasha) have heard from so many friends and fans about this song. Their notes have had me weeping: for the incomparable gift it is to lend a light to anyone’s story, for the grim camaraderie I share with so many of you, for the ongoing need for these simple words. For how difficult it can be to believe them: You did everything right.
When Justin asked if we could remix the song and re-release it, free to download, the only answer was yes. Please.
So here it is, dear friends. Please listen & share as much as you’d like.
We love you. We believe you. You did everything right.

I wrote this song for two women I love, whose experiences of abuse had left them ashamed—feeling they were somehow to blame. I was writing in a dark church sanctuary on a cold autumn night, a room I’d escaped to while trying to process my grief: for these women, for myself, for so many of us. I didn’t think I’d ever play the song for anyone.
But when I did, it was the one thing everyone wanted to talk about after our show. “Hey, so that song. 'You did everything right'…”
And this has remained true ever since. All over the US and abroad, in theaters, colleges, bars, homes, parks, hotel ballrooms, conference centers… listeners have stayed after shows to share their own experiences of abuse—often for the first time. These individuals of all genders, their eyes and their faces, their stories and bravery, their tears and hugs, have changed and changed and changed my life.
This song's always been for them, for you, and for me too. You did everything right.
lyrics
It always felt the same - like a shadow
Like a black cold in your veins
He took the best years In a nightmare
He was right there in everything -
the demon in your dreams
But you did, you did
You did everything right
Yeah, you did, you did
You did everything right
It became in him like a spell,
left a thin shell on his frame
He said "love doesn’t leave” - is love a kind lie?
Is love a blind eye on your pain?
Cause your love won’t make him change
Because you did, you did
You did everything right
Yeah, you did, you did
You did everything right
What’s wrong, what’s right?
Will you lay down your life?
Go on, hold tight,
but don’t you lay down and die
Cause this is not your fight
You can’t always make things right
You already tried
You did everything right
Yeah, you did, you did
Well, you did, you did
You did everything right
Yeah, you did, you did
You did everything right
