about
Sometime in August, a song began singing itself to me about December 2020. I sat down at the piano, and it came out in a rush: words, melody, a little piano hook.
I hadn't sung in weeks. Singing had started to feel like it was for other worlds than this one.
And then this holiday tune became permanently stuck in my head.
For months now, it's been a friendly wink. A gentle reminder:
"It's ok to wish it were otherwise. It's ok to say it out loud."
And it is.
It's a dark time. We wish it were otherwise.
Sometimes you “sing...like it could turn on all the lights.”

The thing about this song is how very 2020 it became.
Once I decided to record it, nothing went right.
Like so many of us, I've felt broken, estranged from myself. So I didn't know quite how to interpret this song. Did it need more shine? Less hope?
We tried recording it a few times. It wasn't working.
We invited musicians to help: What should this sound like? Nothing landed.
I kept trying to give up, but the song was all hello and dark hum. I wanted to sing along.
Then it was November: an election, a worsening pandemic, a holiday.
I stared at piano keys. Decades passed.
In the last days of November, as a Hail Mary, we sent a sparse demo to Dustin Ransom. He heard something we couldn't, and brought the song to life. Turned the lights on: hello and hum.
Thank you for listening with us. Wherever you are this season, we hope you sing along.

At the end of a long road
Driving solo, trying to get home
In the winter, the long wait
and these short days, is it okay — that I
Still want a jingle bell song
Still want a quiet snow fall
I want to dream like we dreamed
Long ago in 2019
In the old days, we all were all together
It was better
In the cold, and the starlight
On these dark nights, is it alright — that I
Still want a jingle bell song
Still want a quiet snow fall
I want to dream like we dreamed
Long ago in 2019
It's been a year, and a lifetime
Doesn’t feel like the right time
But it’s here, silent night time, calm and bright time
Sing a song like it could turn on all the lights time
And I still want a jingle bell song
Still want a quiet snow fall
I want to dream like we dreamed
Long ago, so long ago
